Our Philosophy – How We Work
Each of our lactation consultants has come to this profession through different paths – as a doula, registered nurse, mother, childbirth educator, La Leche League leader, or all of the above! But we have all arrived here with a shared philosophy: We believe every mother and baby should be able to enjoy breastfeeding and each other, within the circle of their family, while growing healthy and happy. If this isn’t happening, we are here to provide guidance, support, and to walk next to you on whatever path is right for you and your baby. Our care is individualized to each family we work with. We also recognize that families may look very different and welcome all types of families to our services. You can learn more about our care by reading our “Stories of Strength” to learn more about the personal experiences of mothers who have worked with us.
Women’s Birth and Wellness Center has a rich history of providing quality out-of-hospital births for women, and IBCLCs have been practicing alongside the midwives at WBWC since it began in 1996. As the need grew, the number of lactation consultants and the number of appointments offered has grown to match it. As Mother and Infant Lactation Care (MILC), we currently offer lactation consultant services five days a week, along with classes, support groups, and telephone support for anyone needing breastfeeding help in our community.
Most of our patients tell us they have been referred to us by friends who have seen us in the past or by healthcare providers who have cared for our patients. We are proud to have such a strong reputation in the community. We will continue to grow our practice and our breastfeeding community in response to what families tell us they could use. Please let us know if you have ideas or needs that you would like to see our service address.
Our lactation consultants are all members of the International Lactation Consultant Association. We stay current on new research and protocols with continuing education, and provide twice-yearly educational updates to the entire WBWC staff.
We are proud that Women’s Birth and Wellness Center was the second birthing facility in the state of North Carolina to receive Baby Friendly status and has been recognized both by Baby Friendly USA and Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute for this accomplishment. We have also received recognition as a Breastfeeding Friendly Business and Workplace by the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition.
